{"id":486,"date":"2017-05-26T23:21:40","date_gmt":"2017-05-27T06:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phmcenter.net\/?p=486"},"modified":"2017-05-26T23:23:11","modified_gmt":"2017-05-27T06:23:11","slug":"massage-therapy-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phmcenter.net\/index.php\/2017\/05\/26\/massage-therapy-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Massage Therapy &#038; Health Care by AMTA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"MTandHC\">Massage Therapy &amp;\u00a0Health Care<\/h3>\n<p><strong>More Americans discussing massage with their doctors or health care providers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In July 2016, more than fifty-one million American adults (17 percent) had discussed massage therapy with their doctors or health care providers in the previous year, consistent with past years\u2019 data.<sup>4<\/sup><br \/>\nOf those 17 percent who discussed massage with their doctor or health care provider, 63 percent of their doctors or health care providers referred them to a therapist\/strongly recommended massage therapy\/encouraged them to get a massage. While physicians led the way in recommending massage (56 percent vs. 54 percent in 2015), chiropractors (46 percent, unchanged from 2015) and physical therapists (52 percent vs. 37 percent in 2015) also recommended massage therapy when their patients discussed it with them.<sup>4<\/sup><br \/>\nMore referrals come from chiropractic offices than other sources, with 10\u00a0percent of respondents reporting receiving referrals at least once per week, and another 23% receiving referrals several times per month. Fifty-six percent of massage therapists received at least one referral every 6 months or less from a hospital or medical office in 2016.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mceItemNoResize\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amtamassage.org\/uploads\/cms\/images\/research-report-2017-2.png\/image-full;size$470,373.ImageHandler\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"MTresearch\">Massage Therapy Research<\/h3>\n<p>The therapeutic benefits of massage continue to be researched and studied. Recent research has shown the effectiveness of massage for the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cancer-related fatigue<sup>8<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Low back pain<sup>9<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Osteoarthritis of the knee<sup>10<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Reducing post-operative pain<sup>11<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Boosting the body\u2019s immune system functioning<sup>12<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Decreasing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome<sup>13<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Lowering blood pressure<sup>14<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Reducing headache frequency<sup>15<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Easing alcohol withdrawal symptoms<sup>17<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Decreasing pain in cancer patients<sup>17<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Fibromyalgia<sup>18<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>About AMTA<\/h3>\n<p>The American Massage Therapy Association, the most trusted name in massage therapy, is the largest non-profit, professional association serving massage therapists, massage students and massage schools.
